Elizabeth Warren Made Chief Justice John Roberts Ask a Question About His Own Legitimacy

During President Trump’s Senate impeachment trial Thursday, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren submitted a question about the legitimacy of Chief Justice John Roberts presiding over the impeachment trial—which the Chief Justice then had to read aloud.

Senator Warren’s question read: “At a time when large majorities of Americans have lost faith in government, does the fact that the Chief Justice is presiding over an impeachment trial in which Republican senators have thus far refused to allow witnesses or evidence contribute to the loss of legitimacy of the Chief Justice, the Supreme Court, and the Constitution?”

After reading the question out loud, Roberts folded his hands and looked towards lead House impeachment manager, Adam Schiff, to respond.

“I would not say that it contributes to a loss of confidence in the Chief Justice,” Schiff replied after a pause. “I think the Chief Justice has presided admirably.”

Warren’s question comes just days after sheet cakes from Brooklyn bakery Butter & Scotch were delivered to 53 Republican senators in order to convince them to let witnesses testify (most notably former national security adviser John Bolton).
