Police, paramedics and firefighters were sent to Holyhead Road after the lorry hit the side of the supermarket and knocked over a lamppost at around 12.30pm.

The lorry driver was taken to hospital but is not thought to have been seriously injured. Nobody else was hurt.

The road was shut between the roundabout with Dudley Street, next to Mecca Bingo, and Russell Street, at the end of Morrisons next to the museum and art gallery.

Drivers were encouraged to avoid the area until the road reopened around two hours later.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to Holyhead Road at 12.26pm to reports of a road traffic collision involving a lorry into a building.

"We sent one ambulance and a paramedic officer to the scene.

"Crews treated one man, the driver of the lorry, on the scene before he was taken to Sandwell Hospital for further checks. His injuries are not believed to be serious."

Councillor Elaine Costigan said emergency services were quickly at the scene opposite Wednesbury Police Station and that the driver was immediately being looked after.

The damaged lamppost has been reported to Sandwell Council's highways team.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We were called at 12.38pm to Holyhead Road, in Wednesbury. We sent two crews to the scene from West Bromwich fire station, a total of eight firefighters.

"One medium-sized flatbed lorry was in collision with a lamppost and the external wall of Morrisons car park.

"The car park wall remained intact. Sandwell Council is in attendance to replace the lamppost.

"The driver was checked over by ambulance personnel. Fire crews left the scene at 1.39pm."
