Report: Liverpool open to loan deal for Nathaniel Clyne

The Liverpool Echo have claimed that Liverpool are willing to let Nathaniel Clyne leave the club on loan this month, but it remains unclear whether there are any offers on the table for the England international.

Clyne, 28, has returned to first-team training after recovering from his second anterior cruciate ligament injury. He is now fit to play, but with Trent Alexander-Arnold starring at right-back, a loan move may be orchestrated for Clyne.

The defender, who joined Liverpool for £12.5million (BBC) from Southampton in the summer of 2015, has since clocked up 103 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side. However, he is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season.

Now, it is believed Liverpool will let the defender leave the club before Friday’s 11pm on loan. However, with his contract expiring, a loan could see Clyne have played his last game for The Reds. The Guardian have claimed this month that West Ham are interested.

Alexander-Arnold is obviously, without doubt, the club’s starting right-back. But should Jurgen Klopp be considering a move to keep Clyne as cover? Liverpool do have options, but they are hardly the ideal back-up.

James Milner and Fabinho are naturally midfielders, while Joe Gomes is shining at centre-back. Neco Williams is still only 18 years of age, and only has a handful of minutes to his name in the senior side. Liverpool should consider keeping Clyne.
