Kaanadante Maayavadanu movie review: Vikas, who debuts as a leading man, displays an effortless performance

It goes without saying

Creating fantasies can be tricky but when it is made to perfection, they display the magical charm of a story that was always there. Kaanadante Maayavadanu shows that characteristic. In the end, it gives a feeling that this story always existed to be told on screen. There is a near clinical finish to the script and execution. This is what fairy tales are made of.

The film starts with the murder of the protagonist, Rummy, whose spirit lives on to extract revenge on the villain. It is as simple as that. It is the way the script has been developed out of this premise that makes the film endearing. The incidents around the plot are realistic, giving the fantasy a believable edge. There is growth and transformation of not only the principal characters but even the minor ones.

The script is the biggest success in Kaanadante Maayavadanu. The performances of all the actors make them look like perfect casts. Vikas, who debuts as a leading man displays an effortless performance. Among the supporting cast, Dharmanna steals the show with his amazing command over comic timing. There is an interesting experiment owing to a tragedy. Raghava Uday who died halfway through the film is replaced by Bhajarangi Loki post interval. It is a smooth transformation which does not disturb the narration.

There is good use of special effects, which only enhances the surprise elements in the story. This is one of the few films where it is used sensibly and with a real purpose.

The main focus of the film is on entertaining but it is a potboiler mix. You have fight sequences and duets too. An out-and-out comedy may have been a better bet. It is only an hindsight observation. Watching this film itself is however a pleasing experience.
