2021 Mercedes-Benz EQS prototype photographed

Official side-by-side photographs show the 2021 Mercedes-Benz EQS will closely follow last year’s Vision EQS concept.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQS concept, revealed at last year’s Frankfurt motor show, was a dazzling, futuristic-looking concept car, as concept cars tend to be.

If you were worried something would be lost in the transition to production EQS, Mercedes-Benz has released some official photographs of the concept and a pre-production prototype side-by-side to put your mind at ease.

It’s not the first time the EQS has been photographed while testing but it’s the first time it’s been snapped next to its concept counterpart.

Though there’s still plenty of disguise on it, we can see the slippery silhouette and dramatic proportions have been retained.

The wheels are pressed almost to the corners of the car, while the rakish, fastback design is evocative of the first-generation CLS albeit even more pronounced.

Unlike the CLS, however, the EQS will feature a hatchback.

The Vision EQS concept definitely had some details that won’t be seen on the production version.

Instead of a conventional taillight assembly, for example, there was a sweeping array of star-shaped lights that echoed the 940 individual LEDs up front.

The concept also featured camera rear-view mirrors and a rectangular steering wheel.

The prototypes, however, have all featured a conventional steering wheel and rear-view mirrors, though the concept’s flush pop-out door handles remain.

Expect the production EQS to retain full-width headlight and taillight assemblies, as in the EQC, but with more conventional lighting elements.

The headlights and daytime running lights will likely feature a subtler blue tinge than the concept, as in the EQC.

The EQS will be the flagship passenger car in Mercedes-Benz’s EQ line of electric vehicles.

Unlike the EQC and upcoming EQA and EQB, it features a dedicated electric vehicle platform known as the Modular Electric Architecture (MEA).

The Vision EQS concept featured electric motors on each axle, providing all-wheel-drive and a combined 350kW and 760Nm.

It used a 100kWh battery which afforded the concept car a claimed 700km of electric range under the WLTP cycle.

Mercedes-Benz also claimed a 0-100km/h time for the electric limousine of 4.5 seconds.

Like Mercedes-Benz’s other flagship sedan, the internal combustion-powered S-Class, the EQS is a large vehicle.

The Vision EQ concept measured 5295mm long and 2077mm wide, with a 3260mm wheelbase.

That’s 51mm longer than a long-wheelbase S-Class, 35mm of which sits in the wheelbase. It’s also 178mm wider.

Debuts of the new EQS and next-generation S-Class are imminent. Both are expected to be revealed this year ahead of launches in 2021.
