It's Official: GMC Is Reviving the Hummer as Its First-Ever All-Electric Truck

The official release will be shared in May, and production is expected to begin in 2021.

Future Hummer owners will finally be able to have a clean conscience. Detroit-based General Motors Company (GMC) released a statement on Thursday saying the carmaker will be reviving its Hummer truck as an all-electric vehicle.

All rumors surrounding the topic have been abated now that the Hummer EV is due to start production as soon as 2021. Its official release will be shared worldwide on May 20.

Monstrous specs for a monstrous truck

In their press release, GMC stated that the EV truck will be able to go from zero to 60 mph in only three seconds thanks to its 1,000 horsepower drivetrain that'll create up to 11,500 pound-feet of torque. 

The timing of the announcement isn't all that surprising, though. Tesla's all-powerful and all-electric Cybertruck was revealed in November, with similar specs. Also able to go from zero to 60 in under three seconds, it's able to cover 500 miles before recharging, and tow over 6,350 kg (14,000 pounds).

The two electric trucks are due to start production at roughly the same time, in late 2021.

However, the Hummer is sure to be impressive in its own right. GMC is waiting until May 20 to officially reveal the Hummer at their Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. 

The second plan for the EV truck's release is to showcase the future Hummer in all its glory via a 30-second-long add during the second half of the Super Bowl on Sunday. 

The Hummer was well-known for its military-esque boxy design, based off of Humvee SUV trucks' design, and was discontinued in 2009.

This is clearly the era for electric vehicles, and it'll be interesting to see how well the electric Hummer sells given most people have associated it as a gas-guzzling machine for decades. Will people be able to change their minds?
