GOLDEN GOAL
Rangers icon Ally McCoist heading to South America to catch rare Golden Dorado which can grow to 4ft and attack anglers
by Stuart MacDonaldRANGERS legend Ally McCoist is travelling to the South American wilderness on a fishing trip in a bid to land his biggest ever catch.
The former Ibrox player and manager revealed he is going to Patagonia next week in search of the rare golden dorado.
McCoist has always wanted to land one of the prized game fish who are known for their aggression and have launched attacks on fishermen and swimmers in rivers.
Patagonia, a vast and wild region which spans both Argentina and Chile, is considered by many anglers to be the best place in the world for fly fishing.
And McCoist, 57, is having to take precautions to prevent him falling ill when he jets out to the remote area with a group of friends.
He is having vaccinations to ward off typhoid, rabies, yellow fever and hepatitis A.
He said: "I am going to Patagonia fishing. It's in the marshlands of Argentina and I'll be fishing for the dorado. It will be great, it's a beautiful fish.
"I'm going for my jags today. I'm having typhoid, hep A, rabies and yellow fever."
Razor-sharp teeth, powerful jaws and a mean attitude give golden dorado their ‘river tiger’ nickname.
The fish, which can grow up to 4ft in length and 75lb in weight, are said to be easily capable of removing errant fingers from unwary anglers.
McCoist revealed his plans on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on TalkSport.
He has been a keen fisherman for many years and even has a range of trout lures, artificial bait used to attract fish, named after him.
In 2018, the former striker started up a firm selling seafood.
He registered Fyne Foods Ireland Ltd with business partner Jeff East.
Official documents say the company is involved in the wholesale of "fish, crustaceans and molluscs"
