Man, toddler daughter killed in fiery crash on NSE
by Audrey DermawanKEPALA BATAS: A man and his young daughter were killed when the MPV they were travelling in burst into flames after a crash at Km119.9 of the North South Expressway (NSE) here, early today.
Yeap Boon Kwan, 23, and Yeap Jing Xuan, 3, died at the scene as a result of severe burns.
Yeap's wife, Chan Sin Yee, 29, survived the accident.
The family of three was headed to Sungai Petani from Sungai Dua here when tragedy struck.
"An initial investigation shows that their MPV skidded and rammed into the left guardrail, before catching fire,” said Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor.
He added that Boon Kwan and Jing Xuan's remains were sent to the Kepala Batas Hospital for post-mortems.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
"We urge those who witnessed the accident to contact the police to assist us in our investigation.
"We also advise all road users to strictly observe traffic rules at all times," he added.
A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department said that they received a call about the incident at about 10am.
"By the time we arrived at the scene, the MPV was 100 per cent gutted," he added.
Several videos and photos of the incident have since surfaced on social media platforms.
Some clips show passers-by trying to douse the fire using an extinguisher, to no avail; while others show the charred remains of the father and daughter.
