Thiem to face Djokovic in Australian Open final after Zverev victory
by Metro Sport ReporterDominic Thiem will face Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final after coming from behind to beat Alexander Zverev in four sets in an entertaining semi-final on Friday.
Thiem, who defeated former champion Rafael Nadal in the quarter-final, recovered from losing the opening set to clinch a 3-6 6-4 7-6 7-6 victory over Grand Slam semi-final debutant Zverev.
The Austrian world number five, a two-time runner-up at the French Open, will face Djokovic in Sunday’s final, after the defending champion knocked out his great rival Roger Federer.
Reacting to his win over Zverev, Thiem said: ‘It was an unreal match, so tough, so close.
‘It was almost impossible to break him. But to get to the Australian Open final is unreal. It’s a great start to the season.’
Thiem won his first two sets through tie breaks and added: ‘Tie breaks are always 50-50. The first one of this tournament I lost.
‘But I had a great start in the two today. That gives you so much confidence.’
Reflecting on the second Australian Open men’s semi-final, former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash said: ‘It didn’t hit the brilliant heights of some of the other matches… but the tension, plenty of drama, and it looked like Thiem got his second wind – there was tired tennis out there, but you have got to give him credit. He dug deep.
‘Once the rally got going he was always going to be the man to beat. Thiem is just an overall player, with a bit more experience, a bit bigger game.’
On facing Djokovic in the Australian Open final, Thiem added: ‘He’s the King of Australia but I will try my best and give everything to win.’
