Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright and Glen Durrant win big at the PDC Awards

by

Michael van Gerwen scooped the Player of the Year prize at the annual PDC Awards, but world champion Peter Wright claimed three trophies thanks to his stunning win at Alexandra Palace.

Snakebite claimed Fans’ Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Televised Performance of the Year for his superb win over Van Gerwen in the World Championship final on New Year’s Day.

Interesting, MVG didn’t even manage a runners-up spot in the fans’ or the players’ categories, with the fans voting in Gerwyn Price in second place, while Price and Nathan Aspinall were joint second among the players.

That is despite Van Gerwen winning 14 titles over 2019 and only falling at the final hurdle in his bid to win a fourth World Championship title.

The Dutchman did pick up the ProTour Player of the Year prize and was the only player to receive a Gold Pin for a televised 9-darter over the year.

Glen Durrant thoroughly deserved his Best Newcomer award after a cracking first season in the PDC which saw him win two ProTour titles and reach the semi-finals of the Matchplay, Grand Prix and Grand Slam.

Young Player of the Year was won by Luke Humphries after he won the World Youth Championship and then enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals of the World Championship at Alexandra Palace.
