December 2019 was the most dangerous month overall for crimes committed in Tube stations, with 400 reported across the busiest 20 stations in London
by Qasim Peracha, Amardeep BasseyThe London Underground is a service we all too often take for granted as it quietly transports millions of commuters across the capital every day.
But there are some risks associated with taking the Tube, with certain crimes like theft and sexual offences often being reported.
British Transport Police is in charge of tackling crime on the network including the safety of around 500 stations across our Tube, Rail, DLR and Overground network.
MyLondon have compared the safety statistics for each of the 20 busiest London Underground to see which was the most dangerous in 2019.
Between all of them, BTP recorded a total of 3,175 crimes, however the crime levels between individual stations vary widely.
Canary Wharf
The safest station in the list is Canary Wharf, London's ninth busiest station overall, which accounted for less than one per cent of the figure.
In the entire year, just 29 crimes were reported to BTP, while in January and June, not even one crime was reported.
By contrast, more than 11 per cent of crimes were committed at one station. Oxford Circus, which is the third busiest station in London, recorded 359 crimes over 2019.
The highest number of crimes recorded at the station were in November (42) and December (50).
December 2019 was also the most dangerous month overall for crimes committed in Tube stations, with 400 reported across the busiest 20 stations in London. The next highest figure was 337, recorded in March.
July is the safest month to travel, with just 2014 crimes reported at the station over the period.
The second most dangerous station was Stratford, with 286 crimes reported at the Tube station in 2019 despite it being only the seventh busiest station.
Meanwhile the 16th busiest station, Leicester Square, was the third most dangerous, and had 266 crimes recorded over the time period.
London's busiest tube station, King's Cross St Pancras, came in fourth, with 250 crimes reported in the station over 2019.
To allow for a fair comparison, the figures do not include crimes which were committed at the National Rail stations of the same name. The BTP statistics differentiate between recording the crimes at Underground stations and rail stations.
