Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has told the Daily Mail that he knows exactly what he will be up against this weekend when he faces Danny Ings.

The Southampton striker swapped Anfield for St Mary’s in the summer, moving for a fee of around £20 million.

Ings has been inspired since checking-in. He has smashed in 16 goals in all competitions this season, reviving the Saints after a sticky start to the campaign.

Southampton travel to Anfield this weekend and ex-Southampton man van Dijk has suggested that he knows all about the threat which Ings will bring.

He told the Daily Mail: “He has been a key man for them and helped turn it around.

“I’m very happy for him and very happy for the club. I hope they kick on, but Saturday we try to get a result. At this stage, you don’t need to study strikers any more.”

Van Dijk, 28, played 80 times for the Saints during his spell at the club before moving to Liverpool.

This weekend he will be hoping to extend his current team’s lead at the top of the Premier League.

Currently, their advantage over Manchester City is 19 points and they are rampant in their quest for a first Premier League title.

For the £75,000-a-week (Spotrac) Ings, he will be hoping to get one over his former club this weekend.

He scored against Liverpool back in August but the Saints were beaten 2-1 that day.

This weekend he will be hoping for another three points to continue Southampton’s decent form and also a goal towards his total for the season.
