Report: Wolves set to complete deal for Rochdale teen Luke Matheson

by

Sky Sports Transfer Centre have claimed (Friday, 12.29pm) are set to sign Rochdale teenager Luke Matheson after agreeing a £1million fee, with the player returning to Rochdale on loan until the end of the season.

Matheson, 17, has starred for Rochdale this season after breaking into the League One’s side team last season. He has clocked up 24 appearances for Rochdale throughout the current campaign, having made seven outings during 2018-19.

The England youth international scored against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup this season, in a 1-1 draw that eventually saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side win on penalties. The right-back also impressed against Newcastle in the FA Cup.

It is reported that a figure of £1million has been agreed, but the right-sided defender will return to Rochdale on loan until the end of the season. He will then return to Wolves to rival Matt Doherty for a place in the Wolves side next term.

TBR’s view – Matheson a player with enormous potential

One of the Football League’s best teenage talents, Matheson moving to a Premier League side seemed inevitable. For Wolves, they will be delighted to have got such a player for a bargain £1million fee.

Can Matheson make the step up to Premier League football next season, and potentially the Europa League? Given his impressive performances in Cup games against Manchester United and Newcastle, it must be said that he can.
