Fashion Friday: Ranbir Kapoor played the iconic role of Janardhan Jakhar or Jordhan in Rockstar. The film was directed by Imtiaz Ali.

Ranbir Kapoor doesn't come to the big screen that often these days but he has delivered films in the past that have aged well. For instances, it is hard to take our minds off his 2011 film Rockstar.

Apart from a captivating storyline, the film shows Ranbir in a never-before-seen avatar. He plays the role of a docile, almost clueless college student - Janardhan Jakhar - who turns into a Rockstar after experiencing a bitter, life-altering heartbreak.

Ranbir's clothes defined his age and mood at every step. When in college, he paired shirts with half-sweaters, denim and sports shoes.

Imtiaz Ali, director of Rockstar, tried to depict his innocence through this hairstyle, too. Janardhan, a college student, had a defined haircut that we would probably see a school kid sporting. This showed that he was naive, and didn't know his way around the world.

In the film, after the love of his like Heera (Nargis Fakhri) leaves him, Ranbir turns into a rebel. Like his behaviour, his clothes slowly change. And this transformation is especially evident in the song Kun Faya Kun. His shabby, unkept look stands for a deconstruction of character that is happening within him.

As he climbs the ladder of success and becomes a popular artist, we see him wear plaid shirts with harem pants - a type of attire he dons at most of his concerts. this is now his own unique style. Janardhan is now Jordan.

He grows a beard and has an angry look on his face all the time. He may be a highly popular artist to the world but remains lonely at heart. He doesn't care about the fandom, though. And that's the nonchalance we see in his clothes - where it might seem that he's just picked random unmatched items of clothing and slipped them on. Except, this styling was carefully executed by Dolly Ahluwalia, Manish Malhotra and Aki Narula.

Ranbir delivers powerful performances and his stage clothes define the same. For instance, he wore an army jacket with a cap in the song Nadaan Parinde. His long hair and fuming expressions brought about his inner conflicts to the screen.

Before Rockstar, Ranbir mainly stuck to boy-next-door roles. The film helped him break that pattern and inspire many, not just with his performance, but with his look too.
