What transfer deadline day deals are Sunderland aiming to complete?

Sunderland have already seen one player depart on deadline day, but what other deals could happen today

by

Sunderland were first out of the blocks on deadline day when they confirmed Aiden McGeady's loan move Charlton Athletic just after midnight.

But the majority of the Black Cats' business today is set to be incoming transfers, with manager Phil Parkinson and the club's recruitment team working to add two new faces before tonight's 11pm cut-off.

Parkinson said earlier this week that he is looking to sign another forward to give cover and competition in the roles currently occupied by Lynden Gooch and Chris Maguire.

And he also wants to add a left wingback as specialist cover for academy product Denver Hume.

So what are the deals that Sunderland are trying to get over the line today?

Sunderland are expected to complete a loan move for the Bristol City forward today with the 20-year-old identified as the man Parkinson wants to add more pace and power to his attacking options.

The Black Cats were linked with the Londoner even before the transfer window had opened and Parkinson confirmed at the end of Decembe r that he was one of his targets.

Sunderland are thought to have agreed a deal with City for Semenyo weeks ago but the move was dependent on the Robins bringing in a striker themselves.

And City last night completed the signing of Nakhi Wells from Burnley for an undisclosed fee, clearing the way for Semenyo's switch to Sunderland to be completed.

Swansea City's Declan John has emerged as the leading candidate to provide cover for Hume in the left wingback role.

Parkinson said on Wednesday night that the Black Cats had made an enquiry about the 24-year-old Wales defender, who was handed his international debut by former Sunderland manager Chris Coleman.

There are thought to be some details left to iron out before a move can be completed, but they are not expected to present a major problem.

Ethan Robson

Homegrown midfielder Ethan Robson returned to Sunderland this month after spending the first half of the season on loan at League Two Grimsby Town.

But, despite impressing Parkinson in training, he has been unable to force his way into the side ahead of George Dobson, Max Power, nor even onto the bench ahead of Grant Leadbitter.

And with Josh Scowen arriving from QPR this week, he has been pushed even further down the pecking order.

In those circumstances, Robson is likely to make another loan move today - possibly a return to Grimsby, although there has been interest in him from other clubs, too.

Will Grigg

Will Grigg could leave Sunderland on deadline day, but it is by no means certain and Parkinson has said he would be happy for him to stay and play his part in the second half of the season.

Bradford City and Salford City expressed interest in taking him on loan but he does not want to drop into League Two.

Oxford United manager Karl Robinson said yesterday he wanted to sign Grigg but Sunderland would not let the striker join a club fighting it out with them for promotion or a play-off place, and the U's are only four points behind them in the table and have a game in hand.

If a Championship side or a team towards the lower end of League One came in for Grigg, Sunderland might consider letting him go - but only if any suitor can afford to pay all, or at least a considerable chunk, of his wages.

Marc McNulty

McNulty has been strongly linked with a reunion with former Sunderland manager Jack Ross at Hibernian.

The Reading striker is on loan with the Black Cats for the season but the deal can be cancelled this month if both Sunderland and the Royals agree, and that would then allow him to move elsewhere.

McNulty has scored five times in 16 games in all competitions for Sunderland, but he has only started one league game since Parkinson took over.

If Sunderland did let McNulty go, it is likely to mean either that Grigg is staying or that another striker is on his way to Wearside.
