This Country getting US re-boot from Bridesmaids director

by

This Country may be ending in the UK with its third series this year – but it looks set to get a new lease of life over in the US.

Of course, America has such a great track record of adapting our series for the small screen. Gavin and Stacey, Skins, The Inbetweeners, Broadchurch…wait, what do you mean they were all catastrophic failures?

Luckily, however, the reboot may just have luck on its side as it’s signed up Bridesmaid director Paul Feig and Sex and the City writer Jenny Bicks to over-see its transatlantic transfer.

Originally created by siblings Charlie and Daisy Cooper, This Country is a mockumentary which follows a brother and sister’s everyday lives living in a remote village in the Cotswolds.

Bicks – who wrote on the iconic 90s show and also, bizarrely, The Greatest Showman – will pen the pilot script and also oversee the project as executive producer alongside Feig.

The director is well-known to comedy fans, having overseen Kristen Wiig’s critically acclaimed breakout chick flick, as well as the all-female Ghostbusters reboot and the Melissa McCarthy Bond spoof Spy.

And for those of you at home worried that the show may lose its inherent weirdness in the transition, apparently both Coopers will be involved in the project as executive producers, too.

Things are already looking promising for the show too – it’s been handed a straight-to-series order by US channel Fox, alongside fellow British adaption Carla starring The Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik, which is based on an equally iconic sitcom Miranda.

This Country first landed on our screens back in 2017 and returned the following year with a second series and a special.

In 2018, the show took home six awards, including a Bafta and an RTA for best-scripted comedy.

The dark comedy will return to our screens and conclude in February, so there’s not long to wait now.

The heartbreaking news comes six months after This Country star Michael Sleggs passed away aged 33.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk following his death, Daisy and Charlie revealed how he’d wanted to be in the third series of the show.

This Country series 1-2 are available to stream now via BBC iPlayer
