Arsenal fans react to confirmed signing of Cedric Soares from Southampton

The defender has joined the Gunners on loan until the end of the season.

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Southampton defender Cedric Soares on loan until the end of the season on their official website.

Mikel Arteta has landed the Portuguese international to bolster his backline, adding him to the signing of Pablo Mari earlier on this month.

Technical director Edu said: “Cedric is a defender with good experience of the Premier League, and of course at international level. He is another strong addition to our defensive unit who will provide our squad with quality.

“I know he is a player who plays with absolute full commitment and energy. We are all looking forward to going into the last stages of the season with Cedric as part of the club.”

Perhaps a loan signing from Southampton may not get pulses racing among Arsenal fans but Arteta will hope this can be a smart, low-risk, low-cost swoop to improve his defence.

Cedric was part of the Portugal side which won Euro 2016 against the odds and has enough Premier League experience to make an instant impact.

Some Arsenal supporters took to Twitter to react to the news, with a general feeling of positivity about the move, with many wondering whether the swoop could see a change of position for one player.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has filled in at right back for two seasons now, largely because of injuries to Hector Bellerin, but some fans hope he will move back into his preferred midfield role now.
