Edo 2020: Ex-PDP gov candidate reportedly set to challenge Obaseki for APC ticket

- Governor Obaseki's 2020 re-election bid may witness a strong challenge as Pastor Ize-Iyamu is allegedly set to contest the APC ticket

- Ize-Iyamu contested against Obaseki on the platform of the PDP in 2016 and recently defected to the APC

- Meanwhile, the Edo state government has denied viral reports that Obaseki is going about soliciting support from people for his second term bid

Political alliances across the world are not rigid as there are rooms for re-alignments, regrouping and strategising. The room for political re-alignment in Nigeria, however, appears to be the most fluid.

A typical Nigerian politician can be a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the morning and before the evening of that same day declare himself/herself a new member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

When Governor Godwin Obaseki defeated the PDP's governorship candidate, Pastor Ize-Iyamu in the Edo state governorship election in 2016, he probably never had the thought his closest rival in the poll would eventually become a co-member of the APC.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu who recently defected to the APC is not just a member of the party as he has indicated an interest in contesting the ruling party's governorship ticket in 2020, according to the tweet posted by a presidential aide, Tolu Ogunlesi.

"The PDP candidate Godwin Obaseki defeated in the 2016 Edo Governorship elections is now going to be challenging him for the APC Governorship ticket in 2020. That’s politics for you. If you can’t acknowledge this principle of impermanence you have no business in politics. Selah," Ogunlesi tweeted.

Legit.ng notes that apart from the poster shared in the presidential aide's tweet, Pastor Ize-Iyamu has not officially declared to challenge Obaseki for the party's ticket in 2020.

Recently the rally which was organised to welcome Ize-Iyamu to the APC was stopped by Governor Obaseki who ordered a ban on all such political activities in the state.
