Taylor Swift’s New Politically Charged Song Is a Call to Action For Youth Ahead of 2020 Election
by Kelsie GibsonTaylor Swift is using her voice for good. Ahead of the release of her Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, the singer dropped a new song titled "Only the Young." The politically charged track, which is featured in the film's end credits, is an instant anthem encouraging America's youth to mobilize in the lead up to the 2020 election. The lyric video — which dropped onto Swift's YouTube channel early on Friday morning — ends with a call to action, with details on how and where to register to vote.
"I wrote it after the midterm elections, when there were so many young people who rallied for their candidate, whether it was a senator or congressman or congresswoman," Swift told Variety about the song. "It was hard to see so many people feel like they had canvassed and done everything and tried so hard. I saw a lot of young people's hopes dashed. And I found that to be particularly tragic, because young people are the people who feel the worst effects of gun violence, and student loans and trying to figure out how to start their lives and how to pay their bills, and climate change, and are we going to war — all these horrific situations that we find ourselves facing right now."
Though Swift has already teased that the song won't be a single or have a music video, it's still exciting to see her using her songs to inspire the next generation. Be sure to tune into the documentary, which landed on Netflix this morning.
