The Heroes Reborn event in the 90s saw an attempt at a reboot for the majority of Marvel's non-mutant characters, and while it wasn't necessarily the best-received storyline at the time, the talent involved still makes it worth another look, even if it's just to experience one of the strangest years in Marvel's continuity.

Onslaught & Avengers

While X-Men: The Complete Onslaught Epic isn't included in the Comixology sale it is a vital place to start when reading the storyline, as the non-mutant heroes were forced to sacrifice themselves in order to stop the threat of Onslaught, which led to the creation of a new world for these heroes to start over on.

Rob Liefeld's Extreme Studios was brought in to take over two of the new series while Jim Lee's WildStorm Entertainment handled the other two. Liefeld's Avengers reimagining is something that needs to be experienced, however, the series is split between creators as Liefeld was taken off the book halfway through its run.

Fantastic Four & Iron Man

WildStorm's half of the Heroes Reborn line were arguably the best of the series, with Jim Lee and Brandon Choi taking over the new adventures of the Fantastic Four. The team rolled through an origin story and battles with every one of their major foes that led the way to their first encounter with Galactus, all in one year of publication!

Scott Lobdell and Jim Lee worked with artist Whilce Portacio to create a new updated origin and armor for Iron Man and his supporting characters in the Heroes Reborn universe, and it was a much darker take on the character than fans were used to seeing.

Captain America & The Return

Arguably the worst title of the series was Liefeld and Jeph Loeb's new take on the origins of Captain America, which featured unimpressive art and an inferior origin story that didn't bring in new readers. James Robinson would take over the title and finish it off stronger than it started. Honestly, this one is worth checking out just to laugh at Cap's barrel-chest again.

After a year in the Heroes Reborn universe, the Avengers and the Fantastic Four were brought back to the mainstream Marvel universe in the Heroes Reborn: The Return mini-series that have been collected along with some post-The Return series that explores some of the leftovers of the Heroes Reborn event.
