Ole Gunnar Solskjaer compares Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United legend
by Metro Sport ReporterOle Gunnar Solskjaer says new Manchester United signing Bruno Fernandes reminds him of club legend Paul Scholes as they can both ‘do absolutely everything’.
The midfielder has completed his £68m move from Sporting to Old Trafford ans is expected to be in the squad for the Premier League clash with Wolves on Saturday evening.
United have been tracking the 25-year-old for years, according to Solskjaer, and have been thoroughly impressed with his all-round game and dedication.
The Portugal international has been handed the number 18 shirt at Manchester United, a jersey synonymous with Paul Scholes and Solskjaer believes they have more than just a number in common.
‘Scholsey, he’s a similar type in skills, he could do absolutely everything as well, Scholesy, so no pressure,’ the Norwegian told Sky Sports.
‘We have got, first of all, a fantastic human being and a genuine lad who comes in, works hard, professional and hates losing.
‘As a player he can do more or less everything on the pitch, he’s a midfielder, box-to-box, loads of energy, scores goals, assists.’
Solskjaer insists that Fernandes will have time to adapt to his new surroundings and that there is no immediate pressure to shine, but is also confident that his new signing will be a huge success.
‘We’ll give him time to show all his skills to the United fans,’ said Solskjaer.
‘You just look at the demeanour, the confidence the quality of the boy and you know some of his skills will help us as a team.
‘I’m 100% sure we’ll see loads of good football from Bruno.’
Fernandes arrives with a glowing reputation for scoring goals from midfield, netting 39 times in 83 Primeira Liga matches during his spell with Sporting.
The former Udinese man scored 33 times in all competitions last season which almost led to United buying him in the summer, but the deal has finally been completed in the final week of the January transfer window.
Scholes himself backed the move for Fernandes last week after United’s woeful home loss to Burnley in the Premier League.
‘Too often this season Manchester United have had two good results and then had two or three bad results,’ Red Devils legend Scholes told Premier League Productions.
‘That performance tonight [last Wednesday] might do him [Solskjaer] a favour in the transfer market. It might spur the club on to spend that few extra million on the players they’re looking at like Bruno Fernandes.
‘It might get done tomorrow because of this. He needs more bodies in the building. He’s got some big injuries so he needs help.
‘The club need to help him now. I fear for the next few weeks because the injured players aren’t coming back for a while. He’s stuck with these players for now unless they sign anyone.’
