Uber driver told gay couple to stop kissing ‘because she’s Christian'

by

A gay man has spoken of his anger after he was asked by an Uber driver to stop kissing his date in the backseat because of her religious beliefs.

Finn Davies, 32, was upset when the female cab driver told him to refrain from kissing because ‘she was Christian’.

He took this as implying she was not happy with the two men being intimate because of her religion.

Mr Davies, who ordered the cab on Sunday morning, told Pink News: ‘We were kissing for a minute or so before we heard the Uber driver say: “Stop that please, I’m a Christian”.

‘Her tone was stern but calm. We immediately stopped and went silent.’

Uber initially responded to the incident on Twitter describing it as ‘certainly concerning’ and offering to refund Mr Davies for the trip.

An Uber spokesperson later added the incident was ‘totally unacceptable’ and the company was looking into it.

Mr Davies had met his date at a friend’s house party in Marylebone, central London, and they decided to share a cab home at 3.25am because they both lived in east London.

Mr Davies said they ended the cab ride early because they felt guilty and embarrassed.

He said: ‘Minutes passed and those feelings turned to anger and concern at the thought of continuing my journey a further 20 minutes alone was making me feel increasingly uncomfortable.’

Mr Davies added: ‘When we got out she didn’t show any remorse or feel guilty. I just can’t believe it.

‘I phoned them up to get it resolved. I just got an automated response and a refund. There was no sign of an apology.

‘I use it every weekend and I’ve never experienced anything like this before.

‘The point I want to make is it was obviously a homophobic remark as she used her religion as a weapon.

‘I just wanted an apology. I couldn’t really care about the £12 journey.’

An Uber spokesperson said in a statement: ‘What has been described is totally unacceptable.

‘Uber has a zero tolerance policy towards discrimination of any kind and we are currently investigating this incident.

‘Any driver found to have violated this policy faces permanent deactivation from the app.’
