The Light Blues also have an option buy the 21-year-old midfielder at the end of the season.

Speaking to RangersTV about his new club, Hagi admitted he can't wait to get started with his new team-mates.

He said: "It is a great honour to play at such a huge club with a lot of history and I am looking forward to meeting everyone in the club and I can’t wait for the first training session.

“Being in such a huge club and having this mentality of winning every game made me take this decision and I am really happy.

"I can't wait to meet the fans and I can't wait for them to meet me and try to build this relationship as good as possible."

Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard admitted Hagi's signing followed a lengthy scouting process.

He said: "We are delighted to be able to add Ianis to the squad of players for the second half of the season.

"We have been scouting him for some time and it was clear that he has the quality to help to make a difference to the team."

Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson added: "It’s fantastic to welcome Ianis to Rangers and we are all looking forward to him joining up with the rest of the squad and we are sure our fans will give him a warm welcome.

“This deal has been structured in such a way that it works for us now and gives us options for the future.”

Hagi jetted into Edinburgh Airport yesterday afternoon to seal the deal.

He joined Belgian champions Genk last summer in a deal worth just under £4million, penning a five-year contract.

He scored three goals and provided four assists in 19 appearances this campaign.

The 21-year-old will become Steven Gerrard's first January signing but SunSport understands he may not be the last.

Gers suffered a blow on Wednesday night when Jermain Defoe was stretchered off in the 2-0 win over Ross county.

Gerrard fears losing the veteran forward for a crucial period - forcing him to make moves into the transfer market.

And SunSport told you last night that the Ibrox club could move for Livingston star Lyndon Dykes - IF they fail to bring in Florian Kamberi on loan from Hibs.

Meanwhile, dad Gheorghe insists his son can be as good as he was.

He said: "The important thing is that Ianis loves football.

"He is a very dedicated boy, who likes to train and doesn't just rely on his talent.

"He's young and has huge prospects. He's good with both feet, he plays in the same position as mine, number 10.

"He makes decisions and makes a difference. He's very comfortable on the ball.

"He's an intelligent player, with a good vision of the game.

"I am sure that Ianis will have a great career and I hope that he can become better than I was."
