Report: Leicester City closing in on move to sign Wolves defender Ryan Bennett

by

Sky Sports Transfer Centre has claimed (Friday, 10:48am) that Leicester City are close to completing a move to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Ryan Bennett, in what is expected to be a permanent deal.

Bennett, 29, has managed just 600 minutes of Premier League football this season – clocking up only 11 appearances in England’s top tier. The likes of Conor Coady, Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss have kept Bennett out of the side.

Leicester have been keen to sign a centre-back, in order to add competition to Wes Morgan, Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu. With Leicester signing Bennett, Filip Benkovic is expected to leave on loan with Championship clubs interested.

The report claims that Bennett missed training on Friday morning, and departed Wolves’ training ground at 10:30am to travel to Leicester. A medical is expected to take place, with a fee agreed between the two sides. He has a contract until 2021.

TBR’s view – Bennett a decent signing, but is it a desperate one?

With Leicester now considered a top-four side, The Foxes are expected to bring in the best. Yes, Leicester have been looking for a defender to add cover rather than become first choice but is Bennett really of the standard Leicester need?

The chances are, Leicester will be in Europe next season. If he cannot get into the Wolves side with Willy Boly injured, surely Leicester can do a lot better than Bennett.
