Star Wars: Underworld Test Footage Reportedly Surfaces
by Narayan LiuLong before the highly-successful Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, had been conceived, Lucasfilm had been developing a different live-action Star Wars series, Star Wars: Underworld-- a grounded look at that galaxy far, far away.
VFX test footage from Stargate Studios for Lucasfilm has started to circulate, offering a glimpse at what George Lucas' live-action series would have looked like. The audio is off and practical effects are far from polished, but that is to be expected considering the purpose of the footage. It is also worth noting that the sequence was filmed in 2010 and the quality of visual effects reflects that.
As explained by Lucas and executive producer Rick McCallum, Star Wars: Underworld, would have been set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and a A New Hope, exploring the seedy underbelly of Coruscant.
Lucas announced the live-action series in 2005 at the annual Star Wars Celebration. In the years that followed, Lucas and McCallum oversaw the development of 50 scripts, each one representing an hour-long episode. These were intended to be released across two seasons. According to McCallum, there were plans to develop 400 episodes in total.
Unfortunately, due to the substantial amount of visual effects work required, Lucas found that the series would be too costly to produce, with one episode requiring a budget of at least $50 million, at least with the technology of the time. For this reason, Star Wars: Underworld was placed on hold in 2010 to await such a time when VFX standards could be met on a smaller budget. The project was ultimately abandoned.
