Tottenham confident of signing Gareth Bale in shock transfer deadline day deal

Tottenham believe they can re-sign Gareth Bale on transfer deadline day, reports say.

Bale left Tottenham for Real Madrid in 2013 in a then world record transfer , but the Welshman has fallen out of favour under Zinedine Zidane.

The forward faces relentless criticism from the Spanish press and the Times claim Tottenham are confident they will seal the transfer of Bale on Friday.

The transfer window closes at 11pm and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has held face-to-face talks with president Florentino Perez.

Levy was in Spain to discuss Real’s interest in Christian Eriksen, who signed for Inter this week, when he expressed his club’s desire to re-sign Bale.

The finer details of the deal to bring Bale back to London are yet to be decided, but Tottenham believe they have made a breakthrough in talks with Madrid.

The La Liga giants have been open to Bale’s exit for some time, but have struggled to find a club that would match his salary.

Bale earns a staggering £500,000-a-week at Madrid and he has been unwilling to uproot his life in Madrid for lower wages at another club.

Asked about Tottenham’s interest in Bale on Friday, Zidane tried to quell talk of a move: ‘Gareth is here with us and I am counting on him. I am not contemplating this possibility.’

Injuries have led to another stop-start campaign for Bale, who has already missed 15 games this season.

Fifteen appearances in total has yielded just three goals this term for Bale.

Tottenham have made two signings this month, with Steven Bergwijn joining from PSV and Gedson Fernandes from Benfica.
