Lewis Capaldi was told 'you can go' by Grammys seat-filler woman
by Ekin KarasinLewis Capaldi being mistaken for a seat-filler at the Grammys was possibly our favourite gaffe of 2020.
And the blunder just got even better as it turns out the woman who thought he was a mere plebeian told him: ‘I can take this seat now, you can go.’
She said this to Lewis – you know, the guy who was up for song of the year on the night.
Ooohhh, we’re positively giddy with the awkwardness of it all!
The Scottish crooner dished all on The Graham Norton show – which will air on Friday evening – after performing his hit Before You Go.
‘There were a lot of people who act as seat fillers who kept coming and going as guests left their seats to make it look busy,’ the 23-year-old explained.
‘During a commercial break a seat filler came up to me thinking I was a seat filler too and said, “I can take this seat now, you can go.”‘
Obviously seeing the funny side, Lewis had a killer comeback.
‘I said, “I know I didn’t win the Grammy, but I thought I’d be allowed to stay to the end!”’ he recalled.
Lewis, our social media king, took to Twitter at the time to tell the world about the gaffe.
‘A lady at the grammys has just come up and offered to take my seat because she thought I was one of the people who sits in the chairs to fill them when someone gets up to use the bathroom,’ he penned.
The singer landed his first ever Grammy nomination for song of the year for Someone You Loved, but sadly lost out to Billie Eilish and Bad Guy.
No matter though, because he absolutely smashed it on the red carpet with his poses and did some top-notch third-wheeling of Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello later on.
