Chance to support this community and its annual wood chop event

by

KEEN COMPETITORS from across the region will descend on the tiny town of Lyonville for its annual woodchop competition this weekend.

Choppers of all ages and with a range of skills will try their hands at the competition, which is part of the Midland Axemen Association's circuit of events.

Each year it draws experienced competitors who display their skills across a range of events including cross cut sawing and chain sawing. The women's nail driving competition is also always a hit.

The annual event is one of several fundraisers hosted each year for the upkeep and improvement of the old Mechanics Hall.

Lyonville village, surrounded by the lush Wombat State Forest, was established as a logging town to supply wood for the mines in Ballarat and Bendigo.

The woodchopping event is a way for the town to continue the legacy of the skills once prominent throughout the region.

Refreshments will be available and a jumping castle will keep children entertained.

The competition will be hosted on February 1 from 10.30am at Lyonville Hall, at the corner of Bremner Ave and Gleeson St.

Entry is $5.
