Aiden McGeady joins Charlton on loan from Sunderland until end of the season
The former Ireland winger could be involved when the Addicks welcome Barnsley to The Valley tomorrow
by Eamon DoggettSunderland outcast Aiden McGeady has made a deadline day loan move to Charlton Athletic for the remainder of the season.
The former Ireland winger could be involved when the Addicks welcome Barnsley to The Valley tomorrow.
McGeady, 33, was told he could Sunderland following reports of a training ground bust-up at the Academy of Light in December.
The much-travelled winger was the top scorer for the Black Cats in League One this season.
But the 95-times capped Ireland international will now turn his attention to the south-east London club who are hovering just above the relegation zone in the Championship.
Charlton Manager Lee Bowyer said: “Bringing in someone with his quality is going to add to the squad. Last season we played against them obviously on three occasions and he’s an exceptional player. He brings goals, he brings assists, he’s someone that can make something out of nothing.
“He’s got experience, he’s played in Europe and for his country. We’re bringing in a very good, experienced player. Coming into the back end of the season experience can be important, Darren Pratley showed that in the play-off games last season.”
Director of Football Steve Gallen said: “I’m pleased. He’s someone I’ve been following personally for years watching him play for Ireland and Celtic in particular. We had a good look at him last year because we played against him a few times.
"We wanted to get someone attacking and someone exciting and I’m pleased we got Aiden.”
