Arts Out There: Music, mindfulness and more to explore

by

Another project emerging from Esperance Community Arts partnerships is getting underway this week with free songwriting workshops for people aged 14 years and over on Wednesday January 29 and February 5.

The workshops have been organised by Kyron Smithson from Kyza Presents and local band Grand Casual and will be followed by a free all-ages performance at the Esperance Senior High School Residential College on Saturday February 8, at 4pm.

All three events have been supported with funds raised through the sale of the Songs from the Southern Edge CDs which feature original songs by local artists recorded in Esperance by Steve West and Pete McMahon and produced by David Hyams as part of a community music project in 2016 and 2017.

The Esperance music scene features a range of community groups in addition to many individual musicians, local bands and school music programs.

These include the annual Esperance Music Festival, the Esperance Brass Band, the Esperance Ukulele Group, the Esperance Drumming Group - Samba and Djembe, Sing Australia, and the Esperance Jazz and Blues Club.

If you are looking for information about these groups or about other local artists, arts groups, arts-based businesses and programs or public art installations you might like to start with the Esperance Arts and Culture Trail. This website and booklet were developed in 2018 and include over 100 arts and cultural listings.

We will be looking for around $5000 in sponsorship to update and reprint this fantastic community resource in 2020. If you have a listing please have a look at the website and let us know if it needs updating. If you have a creative business or are a part of a group that doesn't have a listing you can also sign up on the website.

There are two free workshop series coming up at Esperance Community Arts Space in February. The first, the Act-Belong-Commit Art for Mindfulness workshops with local artist Kathleen Bowering, will run on Tuesday mornings from 10.30am - 12pm for four weeks starting February 4.

Local author and digital educator, Kim Maslin will also be running a series of four Digital Art Workshops as part of the Be Connected program. These will start on February 27 and will run on Thursdays from 10am - 11.30am for four weeks. Please contact us to book your places.
