TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — A Waymo self-driving vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle in a Phoenix suburb and the driver of the Waymo vehicle was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said Friday.

It wasn’t immediately known whether the Waymo vehicle was in self-driving mode when the collision occurred in Tempe late Thursday night, police spokeswoman Sara Soldo said in an email.

A passenger in the Waymo vehicle did not appear to have been injured and no one in the other vehicle was hurt, Soldo said.

Waymo, a Google spinoff, is among several companies testing autonomous vehicles in metro Phoenix.

An Uber self-driving vehicle in 2018 hit and killed a pedestrian in Tempe in a crash that the National Transportation Safety Board said was caused by the distracted human safety driver.

Uber halted its self-driving vehicle testing program in Arizona after the 2018 crash.
