Community funding up for grabs in City of Wanneroo

by

COMMUNITY groups can apply for funding and have a say on how the City of Wanneroo distributes funding.

The City has invited funding applications until March 10 from not-for-profit groups organising projects and events between July and December.

Funding categories include community development, community event or hallmark event such as Christmas events.

Quinns Rocks Environmental Group was a recent recipient of the funding and will use its grant of more than $4000 to run the ‘Exploring Our Coast’ education series at beaches in Quinns Rocks and Mindarie.

The group’s spokeswoman Mel Cook said the series would run from February to October.

“We will be running environmental workshops and activities that focus on plastic and its effect on the ocean, which is a growing concern locally and globally,” Ms Cook said.

“With the help of this grant from the City we plan to raise community awareness about how we can all play a role in the care of our oceans and environmental landscape.”

The City is also running an online survey as part of its community funding review and has invited groups to have a say until February 26.

The review will look at the way the City distributes funding to community groups and individuals to ensure it is fair, effective, and meets the needs and expectations of residents.

It will cover the grants program, which started in 2002, as well as the donations, sponsorships and youth scholarships that the City provides to individuals and groups.
