Stock markets fall

Canada's main stock index posted a triple-digit decline in late-morning trading as the heavyweight financial, energy and industrial sectors moved lower.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 150.03 points at 17,340.53.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 422.89 points at 28,436.55. The S&P 500 index was down 42.00 points at 3,241.66, while the Nasdaq composite was down 104.17 points at 9,194.76.

The Canadian dollar traded for 75.58 cents US compared with an average of 75.66 cents US on Thursday.

The March crude contract was down 60 cents at US$51.54 per barrel and the March natural gas contract was up 1.7 cents at US$1.85 per mmBTU.

The April gold contract was up US$2.50 at US$1,591.70 an ounce and the March copper contract was up 0.25 of a cent at US$2.53 a pound.
