SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition is a fantastic port of a fantastic game, and it fits perfectly on the Switch. Deep, engaging gameplay and stylish presentation combine to make this one of the standout indie releases of the year; this is a great example of a well put-together title. If you are at all a fan of strategy games, or are just looking for a fun diversion to occupy your time for a couple of weeks, pick this up. It puts a neat twist on standard turn-based strategy gameplay, and stands as another fantastic entry in the SteamWorld series.

Publisher: Fractal Phase / Developer: Fractal Phase
Release Date: 26th Apr 2018 (USA) / 26th Apr 2018 (UK/EU)

50% off - was £14.99 / 16,99€, now £7.49 / 8,49€ until 7th Feb 2020

While it lacks any storyline and the randomised nature of the missions may strike some as lazy, arcade-style dogfighter Sky Rogue has plenty of gameplay where it counts. The jet combat action is superb, aided by excellent controls, a wide range of weapons and plenty of stuff to unlock. The 12-stage campaign mode will keep you coming back for quite some time – thanks largely to the unique roguelike approach where death means losing everything, but the experience gained means a better chance of success next time around – and the ability to rope in a friend in co-op adds even more longevity. Granted, when you do eventually complete the game there's not a great deal to bring you back, but it will take quite some time and effort to reach that point – and you'll have had such a blast you won't feel short-changed.

One of our hidden gems on Switch, Sky Rogue is well worth investigating.

West of Loathing (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Asymetric / Developer: Asymetric
Release Date: 31st May 2018 (USA) / 31st May 2018 (UK/EU)

40% off - was £9.00 / 9,00€, now £5.40 / 5,40€ until 5th Feb 2020

West of Loathing is not your average RPG; in fact we’d go so far as to say you’ve probably never played anything quite like it in your life. Its combat won’t blow you away but don’t be lulled into believing that’s what this game is about, as really the whole thing is an adventure in exploration and interaction with a bit of fighting sprinkled in. It can occasionally be a little bit difficult to decipher, but the satisfaction felt upon working out a problem totally makes up for it. The humour is as wonderfully dry as the desert you’re traversing and the writing is some of the best you can find on the Switch. Unless you’ve not got a humorous bone in your body, this is one RPG you can’t risk skipping.

VVVVVV (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Nicalis / Developer: Terry Cavanagh
Release Date: 17th Nov 2017 (USA) / 17th Nov 2017 (UK/EU)

50% off - was £8.99 / 9,99€, now £4.49 / 4,99€ until 5th Feb 2020

VVVVVV still feels every bit as fresh on the Switch as it did on the 3DS in 2010; if you didn't try it back then you should definitely pick it up now. If you did, now may nevertheless be a good time to revisit. Multiplayer makes the Switch version even more interesting, and this is a game that still serves up an intense and enjoyable challenge. VVVVVV is a fantastic value - especially at this price - and a great addition to the Switch library.

And with the growing trend of games plummeting to mere pennies, here's our sub-£1 pick for a super cheap game that's worth the memory space it takes up on your Switch...

Goetia (Switch eShop)

http://images.nintendolife.com/3091d2e54ccd5/goetia-artwork.900x250.jpg
http://images.nintendolife.com/d1a55ba05da0b/goetia-cover.cover_small.jpg

Publisher: Forever Entertainment / Developer: Sushee
Release Date: 26th Apr 2018 (USA) / 26th Apr 2018 (UK/EU)

90% off - was £8.99 / 9,99€, now £0.89 / 0,99€ until 19th Feb 2020

Goetia is a flawed yet engrossing point-and-click-style adventure for those looking for a challenge as well as an interesting story. Aside from the lack of a hint system resulting in the odd infuriatingly obtuse puzzle, it's a bleak, beautiful experience. It’s certainly slow and more text-heavy compared to other titles in the genre on Nintendo Switch, but it’s well-crafted and worth a look, especially at this price.
