Nine-year-old girl in hospital after being hit by car in Plymouth

A nine-year-old girl is in hospital this evening following a collision with a car in Plymouth.

Emergency services were called to Haye Road near the junction of Elburton Road following the incident just after 3.30pm.

The girl's injuries were initially deemed to be serious but police have confirmed they are now not believed to be life threatening or life changing.

Devon and Cornwall Police critical incident manager inspector Rob Byers said: “The injuries are not deemed to be life threatening or life changing. Initially it was believed to be a serious head injury.”

The road has now reopened following the crash at the junction of Elburton Rd and Haye Road.

Insp Byers added that he wanted to thank the public who “have been very patient at an exceptionally busy time of day”.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said earlier: "Police were called at 3.30pm today to Haye Road, Plymouth following reports of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian.

"The pedestrian, a 9-year-old girl, is believed to have sustained serious injuries and is being treated by ambulance at the scene."

Plymouth Citybus also reported delays and that a number of its services had been affected.

A South Western Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “South Western Ambulance Service was called at around 3.25pm about a road traffic incident on Haye Road, Elburton.

“Our crews treated a female patient at the scene and transported her to hospital by land ambulance for further care.”
