Spec Comparo: Tata Altroz vs Hyundai Elite i20 vs Volkswagen Polo vs Honda Jazz vs Maruti Suzuki Baleno
by Aditya JadhavThe Tata Altroz has just made an appearance in the Indian market and has been positioned alongside the Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo, Honda Jazz and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Tata is yet to announce the prices of the Altroz but what's out is the specs and feature list of the hatchback.
Here we compare the new hatchback to its rivals and for starters, we shall consider their petrol guise for fewer complications.
Engine
Here the Polo loses the edge with a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine which is the smallest capacity engine in our comparo while all the others displace 1.2 litres. Altroz in in-line three layout, and the rest in in-line four layouts.
Drivetrain
Given an automatic transmission is an added convenience in an urban runabout, the Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno get a choice of an optional automatic. The Volkswagen Polo gets a dual-clutch automatic transmission as an option but that is exclusive to the GT trim which also employs a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol motor (Not included in the spec comparo). The Tata Altroz, however, is offered with a manual gearbox only but can be expected with an automatic in due course of time.
Power figures
The power rating of the mentioned hatchbacks are in the 83-90PS ballpark and the Polo is the only one with the lowest power rating of 76PS and 95Nm torque. On the flip side, the Jazz and the Baleno sport the highest power rating of 90PS and 89.73PS respectively.
Dimensions
While the Baleno sports the highest overall length, the Elite i20 has the longest wheelbase. However, the highest length, width and height not necessarily transform in the most useable space. And we shall answer the question of who has better space management when we compare the Tata Altroz to its rivals soon.
Pricing
So far the most affordable hatchback in the spec comparo is the Hyundai Elite i20. Only time will tell if the new Tata Altroz will undercut the Elite i20 and be priced lower. Meanwhile, the Honda Jazz is the most expensive hatchback which has a base price of Rs 7.45 lakh and goes up to Rs 9.09 lakh. (All-prices are ex-showroom Delhi.)
