Family of Perth man informed as body recovered from River Tay near town

A body has been recovered from the River Tay near a Fife town.

The family of Perth man Michael McGannon, who has been missing since Saturday evening, have been informed following the discovery near Newburgh.

The body was discovered in the water at noon with the death being treated as “unexplained”.

Police say a formal identification is yet to take place.

The Broughty Ferry RNLI lifeboat was launched to Newburgh at noon.

Emergency services spent Sunday and Monday morning scouring the River Tay as part of an effort to trace Mr McGannon, with a helicopter and a fire and rescue boat team among the resources in use.

On Monday afternoon Fife Police Division posted: “We can confirm that the body of a man has been recovered from the River Tay in Fife.

“A body was reported to be in the water near Newburgh around midday on Monday, December 9.

“Formal identification has yet to take place but the family of missing man Michael McGannon, aged 73, from the North Muirton area of Perth, has been informed.

“The death is currently being treated as unexplained pending further enquiries, and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
