August 30, 2019: McLaren has this week given its latest creation, known simply as the GT, its Australian debut in Sydney.

Promising class-leading performance, comfort and space, the new GT is positioned in the marque’s Sports Series line-up and priced at $399,995 before on-road costs – slightly higher above its 570S sibling ($395,000) but below the existing 570GT ($415,000).

For the first time, this McLaren features luggage space up front and down back, the latter able to swallow a golf bag or two pairs of 185cm skis and boots, as well as some luggage, while up front there’s another 150L of storage space for a total of 570L.

Access to the rear load space is through a front-hinged, electrically-operated full-length glazed tailgate with a soft-close function, in line with the GT's luxury standing.

Some buyers will want to make it easy for themselves and opt for McLaren’s customised four-piece luggage set including a garment case, weekend bag, cabin bag and full-size golf bag available through the dealers.

McLaren also claims plenty of space inside the cabin and great all-round vision thanks to the GT’s glass wraparound cockpit.

The new GT also utilises new high-tech fabrics as an option in the luggage bay. Dubbed SuperFabric and originally developed by NASA, it works alongside new sound- and light-suppressing technology to reduce glare and noise.

Buyers can even choose the super-soft and super-lightweight fabric Cashmere option to further enhance the cabin.

Armed with the a mid-mounted 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the new GT makes 456kW of power and 630Nm of torque – substantially more than the current 570 line-up that makes do with 419kW and 600Nm.

Performance is improved, too, dropping 0.2 seconds on the 570 GT to complete the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint in 3.2 seconds.

That’s commendable given the GT tips the scales at 1530kg with fluids and 90 per cent fuel of its 72L fuel tank filled (DIN kerb weight).

McLaren also claim there’s no compromise to the car’s handling due in part to the lowering of the engine’s position in the chassis by 100mm to make room for the luggage as well as providing the brand’s trademark handling.

The GT also gets completely new suspension, steering and brakes for new levels of isolation from bumps and noise, but without any lessening of feel for those behind the wheel.

That’s also the reason it’s able to negotiate speed bumps (even without the front lift kit) thanks to a larger approach angle than ever before. McLaren claims it’s one of the quietest cars in the class.

Expect the first cars to arrive in arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2019.
