The victim, in his late 20s, was punched several times before he fell to the floor where the attack continued, the police say.

The incident happened at between 2.25am and 2.40am outside Vauxhall Gardens on Vauxhall Street as the victim walked home from St Helier with a takeaway.

The suspect, who was with a group of five to ten others immediately before the incident, is described as in his late 20s or early 30s, with receding brown hair and facial stubble. He was wearing a blue top. It is believed he left the area in the direction of New Street or Val Plaisant.

A spokeswoman said: 'There was a brief disagreement between the suspect and the victim, following which the suspect has started to repeatedly punch the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground where the suspect continued to punch him to the face.'

The victim is described as 6 ft tall with short brown hair.
