Der Film «Sterbehilfe» begleitet drei todkranke Menschen, die sich für ein selbstbestimmtes Ableben entschieden haben. Die Dokumentation fasst den Kampf zwischen Leben und Tod zusammen.
Der 48-jährige Harald Mayer leidet unter Multipler Sklerose. Die chronisch-entzündliche neurologische Erkrankung hat den ehemaligen Feuerwehrmann vollkommen bewegungsunfähig gemacht. Wenn er sich nachts im Schlaf nur umdrehen will, braucht er die Hilfe eines Pflegers. Für Mayer, der früher in seinem Beruf Leben gerettet hat, ist das eigene nichts mehr wert. Er hat deswegen einen Entschluss gefasst: «Ich will gehen: selbstbestimmt!»
Mayer ist einer von drei todkranken Patienten, die sich in der bewegenden ARD-Dokumentation «Sterbehilfe – Politiker blockieren, Patienten verzweifeln» von Tina Soliman und Katharina Schiele über die Dauer von nahezu zwei Jahren begleiten liessen. Im Rahmen der Reihe «Die Story im Ersten» ist der Film nun zu sehen.

Die drei Personen eint, dass sie jeweils einen Antrag auf die Herausgabe des Medikaments Natrium-Pentobarbital gestellt haben. Das Mittel steht für ein schnelles Sterben – es schläfert ein und führt dann zum Tode. Und nach einem Urteil des Bundesverwaltungsgerichts in Leipzig im März 2017 muss es auch herausgegeben werden – vorausgesetzt bestimmte Bedingungen seien laut medizinischen Gutachten erfüllt.
Obwohl Mayer und die anderen Antragsteller, wie die ebenfalls an Multipler Sklerose leidende Ulrike Franke oder der schwer an Krebs erkrankte Hans-Jürgen Brennecke, die nach ihrer Meinung erforderlichen Bedingungen zur Sterbehilfe vollumfänglich erfüllen, hören sie von den Behörden nichts mehr. Mehr als ein Jahr nach dem Urteil werden auf Weisung des deutschen Bundesgesundheitsministeriums dann sogar noch alle Anträge abgelehnt. Solimans aufwühlender Film geht so auch der Frage nach, ob Bundesgesundheitsminister Jens Spahn seine eigene politische Ansicht über die Rechtsprechung stellt. Hans-Jürgen Brennecke jedenfalls will für seine Sache kämpfen.
