Silver Jews members & more playing David Berman tribute show at Union Pool
by Bill PearisDavid Berman took his own life in August just days before his new project Purple Mountains were to have started their first-ever tour. There has been an outpouring of love since, with tributes and benefit shows, most recently William Tyler’s in Nashville that featured a number of other former Silver Jews live members (including Berman’s widow, Cassie).
For those in NYC, there will be a Berman tribute/benefit happening at Union Pool on January 4, which would’ve been his 53rd birthday. Dubbed “DCBday,” the night will feature members of Silver Jews and Purple Mountains and proceeds go to Musicares and the NYC chapter of The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Tickets are on sale now.
The full lineup hasn’t been announced yet, but the bands for the night — The Blue Arrangements, The Wild Kindness, Peers in the Punklight and Birds of Virginia — will include Silver Jews players Steve West (who is also in Pavement) and Matt Hunter (also of New Radiant Storm King), and Purple Mountains player Kyle Forester (also of Woods). Singers include Patrick Stickles (Titus Andronicus) with lots more to be announced. Boston’s Hallelujah the Hills will also be on the bill, comedian/musician Chris Crofton will MC the night, and Union Pool will be decorated by artist and album cover designer Steve Keene.
