Storm Brendan to batter Britain with 100mph winds from tomorrow

More high speed gusts are heading for the UK after the first named storm of the season lashed the country last night.

Weather warnings remain in place after Storm Atiyah swept into the south-west of England and Wales last night, disrupting transport and power networks.

As the clear up gets underway this morning, Storm Brendan, is expected to hit Britain on tomorrow with winds of up to 100mph.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather alerts this morning for north-west Wales to the Isle of Wight and the east coast from Norwich to Middlesbrough.

Whether you’re travelling by road, rail, air or ferry, the Met Office warns of delays and says short-term blackouts are possible in some areas.

Western Power Distribution said it had experienced 26 high voltage faults in the south-west on yesterday and two in Wales, leading to 5,500 customers being cut off from power over the course of the day.

In the hour leading up to 9pm last night winds of 70mph hit Culdrose in Cornwall.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkil said: ‘It’s very windy in the west and south-west so that’s where we’re going to see the greatest impact unfortunately’.

Coastline safety campaign Coastsafe urged people in the area to be wary of tidal surges and debris being thrown over sea walls during the storm.

The M48 Severn Bridge introduced lane closures on yesterday due to increasing wind speeds.

The Met Office warns England and Scotland will be ‘windy across all areas’ tomorrow with severe gales affecting the north-west.

Wet and windy weather is set to carry on into Wednesday and nearly and inch of rain will hit much of the country within 24 hours as Britons head to the polls on Thursday.

Voters getting ready to head out at 7am in the morning should prepare themselves for -3C in Aberdeenshire, 1C in the north of England and 0C in the south.

Later in the day temperatures will warm up to 11C in Plymouth, 5C in Newcastle and 7C in Glasgow.

Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said: ‘There will also be pretty heavy rain everywhere.

‘Wednesday looks blustery and election day will be a wet one in the South, with blustery showers in the North, then turning colder still by the weekend with wintry showers on higher ground in northern England, Scotland and possibly North Wales.’
