Clean-up operation underway in Mayo after storm
MAYO has come through Storm Atiyah without suffering too much damage.
Members of Mayo County Council are involved in a clean-up operation with trees being removed from roads in the Swinford, Claremorris and Westport areas.
County Mayo experienced high winds and rough seas last night as Storm Atiyah made landfall on the west coast.
A Status Orange wind warning was in effect throughout the night and as a result of the strong gusts many roads were blocked by fallen trees and debris.
Mayo County Council staff were on call overnight to deal with the blockages, and have successfully cleared roads in the Municipal Districts of Castlebar, Ballina, Claremorris and West Mayo.
Mr Peter Hynes CE Mayo County Council praised the vigilance of the local authority staff and the cooperation from local communities and advised the people of Mayo to “remain cautious when driving in the aftermath of a storm as there is still the possibility of strong gales or blocked roads, particularly in coastal areas
ESB Networks crews are repairing faults in Swinford, Cong and Carrowbeg, Westport.
Up to 100 homes are without power and they are expected to have their supply restored in the early afternoon.
