Joker Lands Four Major Golden Globe Nominations
by L.D. NolanAfter winning the coveted Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, Todd Phillips' Joker is continuing to prove itself a major contender this awards season.
Joker was nominated for four Golden Globes: Best Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama and Best Original Score - Motion Picture.
For Best Motion Picture - Drama, the other nominees are 1917, The Irishman, Marriage Story and The Two Popes. Joker's composer Hildur Guðnadóttir is competing against Little Women's Alexandre Desplat, Marriage Story's Randy Newman, 1917's Thomas Newman and Motherless Brooklyn's Daniel Pemberton.

Phillips will be competing against Bong Joon Ho (Parasite), Sam Mendes (1917) and Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) for Best Director, while Joaquin Phoenix will take on Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari), Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Adam Driver (Marriage Story) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama.
As of writing, Joker Phillips says he would return has earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office on a budget of between $55 and $70 million, making it a major win for Warner Bros. Although a sequel has not yet been officially greenlit, on the condition that the project had "thematic resonance."
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham. It will be available on digital HD on Dec. 17 and Blu-ray and DVD on Jan. 7.
