Inside Career of Uhuru's New Millionaire Nominee
by John Paul SimiyuPresident Uhuru Kenyatta's nominee for the position of controller of budget, Margaret Nyakango on Thursday, November 28, appeared before MPs for vetting.
Nyakango was picked by President Kenyatta from 15 applicants shortlisted for the position which fell vacant after the expiry of Agnes Odhiambo’s term.
During the vetting, she admitted being worth Ksh68 million, with her house making up close to half of that value.
Nyakango has had a stellar career that made President Uhuru consider her fit to replace Odhiambo.
She is a business administration PhD holder from the University of Liverpool and also has a masters degree in the same field.
According to her LinkedIn profile, she has a penchant for accounting, auditing, strategic management, and organizational development skills, with research interests in strategic workforce planning within the African continent and beyond.
Nyakango served as a lecturer at KCA University (Nairobi CBD Campus) where she was teaching public sector finance and is also a director at Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).
Away from the academic and intellectual field, she is part of the Limuru Country Club's Finance Committee.
She is also a councilor at Kenya Ladies Golf Union, where she is tasked with managing the Golfer of the Year event.
Nyakango also serves as a convener of ladies' golf tournaments in the country and a team member of the taskforce for amending the constitution of the Ladies Golf Union in Kenya.
The Office of Controller of Budget is an independent office overseeing the implementation of the national and county government budgets.
The holder of the Office serves for a non-renewable term of eight years and is not eligible for re-appointment thereafter.
