Steven Gerrard: Liverpool legend backs 'faultless' Van Dijk for Ballon d'Or

- Steven Gerrard believes Virgil van Dijk deserves to win 2019 Ballon d'Or award

- The Liverpool legend says he is convinced the Dutchman star had a remarkable 2019 above others

- Van Dijk will face stiff competition from Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentine forward Lionel Messi

Steven Gerrard has tipped Liverpool center back, Virgil van Dijk, for the Ballon d'Or 2019 award glory ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Dutch star faces stiff competition from the Juventus forward and Barcelona star for this year's edition of the award slated for December.

Van Dijk failed to win Premier League but enjoyed a prosperous season under Jurgen Klopp as he was an integral part of the indomitable Liverpool squad that won Champions League.

And Gerrard, who captained Liverpool to their historical Champions League win over AC Milan in 2005, believes the centre-back deserves to win the award "100 percent" for his "faultless" performance.

The Rangers manager praises Lionel Messi for guiding Barcelona to domestic glory but submitted no players deserves the individual gong than the Dutch star, complementing a position earlier made by Klopp on the individual glory.

"I'm Messi's number one fan, for sure. I love the player. Obscene numbers in his game in terms of assists and goals. I'm definitely a Messi fan, in the gang," Gerrard said.

"But if you talk about consistency from one player over a year, who wins the European Cup and is absolutely faultless in every performance, that means you deserve to win the Ballon d'Or."

Van Dijk had earlier beaten Messi and Ronaldo to UEFA best men player award in August but trailed behind the Barcelona star in FIFA The Best award in September.
