Three fatalities on Mayo roads so far this year

THREE deaths have occurred as a result of accidents on Mayo roads so far this year.

Twenty-nine people have suffered serious injuries in accidents, figures circulated at a meeting of Mayo County Council roads and transportation strategic policy committee reveal.

The report issued by the authority's road safety office made for positive reading, with deaths on the county's roads decreasing from nine last year to just three to date this year.

Twelve fatalities were recorded the previous year (2017).

The breakdown of fatalities on the roads in Mayo over the period from 2008 to date are:

2008: 10

2009: 10

2010: 8

2011: 12

2012: 7

2013: 6

2014: 11

2015: 13

2016: 4

2017: 12

2018: 9

2019 (to date): 3

 

The road safety office has run a number of high profile safety campaigns again this year, the most recent targetting texting drivers, with a hearse used to deliver a hard-hitting message about the dangers they pose.
