When is Black Friday 2019?

This year Black Friday falls on Friday 29 November 2019 and will see millions of products covering fashion, beauty, tech and toys slashed as shoppers gear up for the festive season.

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday was originally an American tradition, dropping on the day after Thanksgiving each year, but quickly transferred to across the pond.

Now most major UK retailers offer massive discounts as part of the huge shopping event in an attempt to persuade you to spend your hard earned cash in the run-up to Christmas.

Over the last few years the UK event has become more of an online affair. Last year while UK high streets remained deserted, online tills were ringing in £2.4billion splurge, with some shoppers forced to join virtual queues for stores like Debenhams and GAME due to demand.

One thing is for certain British shoppers and retailers are turning their backs on the chaotic in store scenes witnessed across America during the sales - possibly for good.

So far for this year, retailers have decided to go early with deals.

Argos, John Lewis, Amazon and Currys were all major players who actually kicked off discounting on 22 November - a full week in advance on Black Friday,

For the first time since 2015, Wal-Mart-owned Asda is taking part with a selection of rollback savings on a number of tech, home and toy items available in store.

Budget chain Lidl has also joined the discounts with an insanely cheap Xbox One S deal.

Why is it called Black Friday?

Nobody's entirely sure, but most suggestions relate back to how businesses and retailers detail their finances.

Many shops see the biggest profits of the year on Black Friday and businesses will detail their gains in black ink (and losses in red ink), hence the name.
